"The Ship of Hymir"

Artist Statement
We have used myth for centuries to navigate the world, from the passing down of oral stories to the writing of physical literature. Knowing this, the telling and preservation of myth is something that we should hold dear to our hearts. Myth inspires creativity, widens our understanding of others whom are different from us, and builds our capacity to appreciate what is far from our knowledge. Inspired by The Prose Edda, I configured this pinch pot into the shape of a Norse ship. During it's creation I learned both of the fragility and the strengths of the clay I was working with (more often than not the former). After multiple situations in which I accidentally broke the same thin piece off of the ship's tail, I was reminded of the story in which Thor tricks the giant Hymir so that he may use his ship to sail out and slay the Midgard Serpent. During the battle, Thor's reckless behavior causes Hymir's ship to be destroyed. As I continued my process I felt that I was treating this ship with much the same recklessness as Thor: though unlike him, I think I was able to learn my lesson after the third breakage.
